Plan on 1-1/2 hours, as an extensive interview is taken on the first visit. You will fill out a complete medical history which we discuss in detail, along with your current condition.
Next, your tongue is examined and your pulses are felt. Tongue and pulse diagnosis give the acupuncturist important information about your body’s ‘climate’ and how to treat your condition.
Treatment usually consists of acupuncture. Needles are inserted and left in place while you relax, lying down, for about 30 minutes.
Herbs are often prescribed to take at home. Sometimes other modalities are used, such as cupping, acupressure, moxibustion or heat lamp, depending on the condition being treated and your constitution.
If you feel nervous about needles, be assured that acupuncture is nothing like the painful shots you get at the Western doctor’s office. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and gently inserted.
Only disposable, sterile needles are used, so there’s no concern about transmission of disease from someone else to you.
