What exactly is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into various parts of the body to naturally restore its balance.
What are the objectives of acupuncture treatment?
• To relieve pain and other symptoms
• To strengthen the immune system
• To balance, harmonize and integrate organ functions so that they work together effectively
How does it work, exactly?
No one knows for sure exactly how stimulation of certain points on the body stops pain, for instance. Studies indicate that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous systems, and that it releases endorphins from the brain, which makes acupuncture particularly effective in pain control.
Does it hurt?
You will feel some sensation as the needles are inserted, and perhaps some heaviness in the area, but acupuncture generally is not painful.
Suppose I’m afraid of needles?
Acupressure, cupping, electrical stimulation, herbal therapy and other modalities can be used instead of needles.
Do I have to take herbs?
Herbs are often prescribed. They work synergistically with acupuncture to heal the condition being treated. Unlike pharmaceuticals, which usually treat the symptoms only, herbs and acupuncture treat the root of the problem.
How long does an acupuncture treatment take?
Usually needles are retained for 20-30 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Because each person’s condition and response to treatment are unique, the number and frequency of treatments will vary. Relief from symptoms may be felt immediately, the next day, or may take weeks, depending on the severity of the problem.
